In November 2012 Rihanna performed her hit single Diamonds on Saturday Night Live to a greenscreen backdrop of computer generated ‘Seapunk’ graphics. A wave of protest spread amongst tween artists on Tumblr: but how is it possible to put conditions on referencing imagery today when creation undoubtably involves copying.
Diamond Dust looks at the augmented realities of the internet, computer games, image modelling. Time herein is a key facet – through digitisation, time has become increasingly separated from material, disembodied and illusionary. These image-worlds are composites – combining historical periods, cultures and places. The originality and ownership of imagery has become an estranging notion as imagery increasingly sublimates first hand experience and natural impulse: do we desire this glamour instead?
This event will took place at Inspace, Edinburgh, as part of Edinburgh Art Festival 2013’sFilm Club. Every Wednesday evening during the Edinburgh Art Festival (1 August – 1 September 2013) the ‘EAF Film Club’ presented emerging artists’ film, video and performance. Each Film Club evening in 2013 was curated by an organisation from outside of Edinburgh, invited to select work around the theme of Interval As Integration. Other EAF Film Club screenings were curated by The Royal Standard, Liverpool; The Telfer Gallery, Glasgow; and Generator Projects, Dundee.
